Flare

A tiny stick of fire in a building that wants you blind and silent.

The Flare is a single-use consumable light source in Lethal Company, designed to pierce the suffocating darkness that defines most of the industrial facilities your crew will crawl through. It's one of the simplest pieces of gear in the game, yet one of the most tactically double-edged: the same brilliant glow that lets you spot a lurking Hound or read a crate label will also act as a beacon screaming your position to every light-sensitive predator in the building.

In practice, the Flare sits at the intersection of navigation tool and liability. Experienced crews budget them carefully, saving them for genuinely pitch-black corridors or for the desperate moment when the Hound is circling just out of sight and you need to flush it into the open. New crews, meanwhile, tend to light them up the second the lights die, turning themselves into a glowing target in a building full of things that hunt by sight and sound.

Lore & Background

The Flares scattered through the facility are, in-universe, standard-issue emergency lighting stock. The company that built these sprawling industrial complexes stocked them for maintenance crews: if the grid failed, you'd light a flare, find the breaker, and get back to work. What the stockpiles never accounted for was that the grid would fail permanently, the maintenance crews would vanish, and the only things left to find the breakers would be things that had no need for them.

The irony is sharp. The Flare is the one piece of gear that turns the facility's greatest weapon—its darkness—into a vulnerability. In the pitch-black lower levels, a single flare turns a corridor into a runway, letting you see the Hound's silhouette against the walls, spot the exit hatch, or confirm that the thing breathing in the next room is just a vent. But the Hound, for all its other weaknesses, tracks light with an almost obsessive focus. A flare in a dark hall is a dinner bell.

Fleet-adjacent lore suggests the Flares were manufactured to a military spec, which is why they burn hot, bright, and long enough to be genuinely useful rather than a brief spark. They're cheap, disposable, and designed to be thrown without a second thought. The company that made them never intended for them to be thrown at the dark. They intended for them to be thrown at the dark *on purpose*, by people who knew what was in it.

In Their Own Story

The lights died on the fourth level. Not all at once—just a slow, grinding dim, like the building was holding its breath. Marisol counted three flares in her pocket. She'd had six at the dock. Two went to the Hound in the loading bay, where she'd thrown them to flush it out of the crate stacks. One had been a mistake in the office wing, where the light had drawn something *else* out of the ceiling tiles.

"Save one," she told the others. "Save one for the exit."

They didn't save one. They never do. The corridor to the surface was forty meters of absolute black, and the Hound was somewhere behind them, patient, tracking the faint glow of the last flare Marisol was holding at arm's length. She walked. She counted. She did not run. The flare burned down to a stub of white ash in her fingers, and she kept walking, because the Hound could only track what it could see, and in the true dark, for the last ten meters, she was no one's target. She was just a sound. And the Hound, for all its eyes, was not always the fastest thing with ears.

Reader's Guide

Flare – a single-use stick of sustained firelight that you hold or hurl to illuminate a dark stretch of facility.

- Effect: Bright, omnidirectional light source - Duration: Sustained burn until the stick is consumed - Range: Illuminates a wide radius around the flare's position - Weight: Negligible; you can carry several at once - Use: One per flare, then it's ash

Tactical note: Deploy a Flare when you are in a genuinely dark corridor and need to confirm what's ahead, locate an exit, or flush a Hound out of cover so your crew can flank it. Avoid lighting one up in an open area where a Hound is already within earshot—the glow will lock its attention on you and it will close fast. Do not throw a Flare into a room you haven't cleared; you will illuminate the thing in the corner and it will illuminate you right back.

Common new-crew mistake: pulling out a Flare the instant the overheads flicker, before checking whether a Hound is already in the next room. You've just turned yourself into a lighthouse in a dark parking garage. Save the light for when you actually need to see, not when you're nervous.
