Compass

When the dark swallows every landmark, trust the needle.

The Compass is a small, handheld navigation device available to every crew member in Lethal Company. In the sprawling, pitch-black industrial facilities where employees are sent to haul scrap, orientation is a genuine survival problem—corridors loop, rooms repeat, and the exit can be dozens of meters away in a direction you can't feel. The Compass solves that problem with a simple needle that points steadily toward the nearest facility exit, letting you stop guessing and start moving with purpose.

It is one of the most straightforward pieces of pre-run equipment you can purchase: no ammo to manage, no cooldown to track, no risk of malfunction mid-sprint. You buy it, you hold it, and the needle does the rest. For crews that value not getting lost over raw firepower, it is often the first item grabbed from the menu.

Lore & Background

The Company's internal memos—those yellowed, slightly coffee-stained documents employees sometimes find tucked into supply crates—refer to the Compass as a 'standard-issue orientation aid.' The language is deliberately bureaucratic. There is no mention of why the facilities are so disorienting, no apology for the fact that a room you walked through thirty seconds ago may no longer exist where you left it. The Compass is simply listed alongside the flashlight and the radio as a tool the Company 'provides for the convenience of field personnel.'

In practice, crews learn to respect it more than the memos suggest. The industrial complexes are designed—or have degraded—into mazes of identical corridors, stacked walkways, and dead-end loading bays. Without the Compass, a single wrong turn in a darkened warehouse can cost minutes of backtracking, precious battery life on your flashlight, and the growing dread that something is following you down the wrong hallway. With it, you walk in a straight line toward the exit and keep your eyes on the dark ahead instead of the floor beneath your feet.

Veteran employees will tell you the Compass is not a substitute for spatial awareness. It points to the nearest exit, not the safest one. If a Screeper is between you and that door, the needle will cheerfully guide you straight into its teeth. It is a tool, not a guarantee. The Company, as always, provides the instrument and leaves the judgment to the person holding it.

In Their Own Story

The corridor was the same as the last one. And the one before that. Grey concrete, a single flickering fluorescent tube overhead casting everything in a sickly amber, the hum of some distant ventilation system making the silence feel *occupied*. Mara held her flashlight low, the beam cutting a short, useless cone in front of her boots. Three of her crew were ahead, voices muffled and worried, calling out a direction she couldn't see.

She pulled the Compass from her jacket. The needle was still. Then, with a small mechanical click, it swung and settled, pointing two meters to her left, down a hallway she'd already walked past twice. She followed it. Forty steps. A door. The cold night air hit her face like a slap, and she was through, out, alive, the facility groaning behind her like something that had decided, for now, to let them go.

Reader's Guide

Compass — a handheld navigation tool that points you toward the nearest facility exit.

• Type: Utility (non-combat) • Function: Needle indicates direction to the closest exit • Ammo / Range / Damage: N/A • Weight: Negligible; no movement penalty • Cost: Low; one of the most affordable pre-run purchases

Tactical note: Grab the Compass whenever you're heading into a facility with multiple floors, long corridors, or heavy darkness. It is especially valuable in later levels where the map layout is dense and the exit is far from your spawn point. Avoid relying on it exclusively—remember it points to the *nearest* exit, which may be on the opposite side of an active Screeper's patrol. If you hear something before you see the door, the needle is not a shield.

Common new-crew mistake: buying the Compass and then ignoring it because you 'know the way.' You do not know the way. The facility is not a building you can memorize. Hold the needle, follow it, and stop second-guessing every identical-looking hallway.
